The Sitges Museums face the final stretch of the exhibition 'Absences and Presences. Charles Deering's artists in the Banc Sabadell Art Collection' with complementary activities
The Sitges Museums face the final weeks of the Absences and Presences exhibition. The artists of Charles Deering in the Banco Sabadell Art Collection with a program of activities that will allow you to broaden your view of the exhibition and delve deeper into the figure of Charles Deering, his project in Maricel and the cultural and artistic context of the first decades of the 20th century.
Before the closing of the exhibition, scheduled for October 25 at the Maricel Museum, the program offers different approaches to its story through guided tours, a conference, a music concert and an activity linked to the landscape and the natural environment.
From the exhibition to the legacy of Deering in Maricel
The first date will be on September 17, at 6 p.m., with La huella de Charles Deering, a visit by the curator Sebastià Sánchez Sauleda that proposes a tour beyond the exhibition hall.
The visit will begin in the Maricel Museum, starting with the works and artists present in the exhibition, and will continue in the Palau de Maricel, where participants will be able to discover the legacy that the American collector left in Sitges and the dimension of the project he promoted in the villa.
The exhibition will also have two dates for guided tours, Saturdays September 19 and October 17, at 10 a.m. in English, 11 a.m. in Catalan and 12 p.m. in Spanish. There will be two opportunities to delve into the works, artists and context that articulate this proposal.
Hispanic collecting in the United States
The program will continue on October 9, at 6 p.m., with the conference The Golden Age of Hispanic Art Collecting in the United States, by Ignasi Domènech, Head of Collections and Exhibitions at the Sitges Museums.
The session, which will take place in the Espacio Rocamora of the Maricel Museum, will allow the figure of Charles Deering to be placed in a broader phenomenon: the interest in the collection of Hispanic art that developed in the United States and that played a prominent role in the international circulation of works and artists.
A trip to early 20th century American jazz
Music will take over on October 16, at 6 p.m., with a concert by the Apocadixie Quartet in the Gothic Hall of the Maricel Museum.
The repertoire will be made up of American jazz pieces from the period 1900-1929, in a proposal that will allow us to approach the musical context of the first decades of the 20th century and expand the story of the exhibition through the sounds of an era marked by profound cultural and artistic transformations.
Maricel, the sea and the landscape
One day before the closure, on October 24, the program will offer a different look at Maricel's surroundings with a seabird observation activity, organized with Biodiversidad Sitges, from approximately 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Aimed at people over the age of 8, the proposal will combine a first theoretical part in the Espai Rocamora with a practical observation session from the terrace of the Maricel Museum and the San Sebastián beach. The activity will thus connect heritage, landscape, sea and biodiversity in one of the most unique environments of Sitges.
A Work of the Month as epilogue
Although the exhibition will close its doors on October 25, its story will have a final epilogue on October 30, at 6 p.m., with a new session of the Work of the Month in the Espacio Rocamora of the Maricel Museum.
The protagonist will be Castillo del Rey II. Panel of the Grand Hotel de Palma (1902), by Santiago Rusiñol, a work linked to the story of the exhibition that will be presented by its curator, Sebastià Sánchez Sauleda.
The session will allow us to continue pulling the thread of an exhibition that has recovered Charles Deering's relationship with some of the Catalan and Spanish artists who were part of his artistic and collecting universe.
The exhibition Ausencias y presencias. The artists of Charles Deering in the Banco Sabadell Art Collection, until October 25
The exhibition reconstructs, based on works from the Banc Sabadell Art Collection, the presence of some of the Catalan and Spanish artists of the early 20th century who were part of Charles Deering's collecting universe. Names such as Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, Hermenegild Anglada-Camarasa, Joaquín Sunyer, Darío de Regoyos, Ignacio Zuloaga, Joaquín Mir or José María Sert, among others, return symbolically to the spaces of Maricel and dialogue with the history of the ensemble and with the artistic project promoted by Deering at Sitges.
