Commemoration of International Women's Day at the Sitges Museums with three activities that highlight the role of women in art and culture

The Sitges Museums join the commemoration of March 8, International Women's Day, with a program of activities that invites us to revisit cultural heritage and history from a contemporary perspective and with a gender perspective. The proposal includes a special guided tour of the museums, a conversation between specialists about two artists separated by almost a century and a new session of the Santiago Rusiñol Reading Club focused on the figure of Lluïsa Denís.

The program aims to contribute to making women more visible in the history of art and culture, but also to open spaces for reflection on those stories that have often been left in the background or directly out of focus.

This Sunday, March 8, a special guided tour of the spaces of the Cau Ferrat Museum and the Maricel Museum will take place, with sessions at 11 am in Catalan and at 12 pm in Spanish. The proposal invites us to rediscover the collections from a gender perspective and to focus on the women who have often been left behind in the great artistic and cultural stories. The tour raises necessary questions about the roles, silences and absences in the cultural history of Sitges, and invites the public to rethink the heritage with a critical and contemporary perspective. On Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m., the Gothic Room of the Maricel Museum will host the talk Vincles. Elisea Lluch vs Amèlia Riera. Two women, two centuries, with the participation of the historian and art critic Elina Norandi and the collector and curator Pere Pedrals. The session, presented in the form of a dialogue, will delve into the trajectories of Elisea Lluch i Garriga (1831–1897) and Amèlia Riera i Toyos (1928–2019), two artists separated by almost a hundred years but connected by their creative vision and the difficulties of developing an artistic career in contexts that are often unfavorable for women. The conversation will allow us to discover the common points and also the differences between their works, as well as the social, cultural and artistic context in which they developed their careers. The activity is free and with limited capacity.

The program will be completed on Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m., with a new session of the Santiago Rusiñol Reading Club, which will take place in the Rocamora Room of the Maricel Museum. On this occasion, the meeting will revolve around the book A l’ombra del rossinyol, with the participation of its author, Juan Carlos Rodríguez. The work recovers the figure of Lluïsa Denís, a multifaceted artist who has often been overshadowed by the figure of her husband, Santiago Rusiñol. Through the story, the family and social influences that marked her destiny are traced and the relationship with the modernist artist is described, in which artistic complicity and an intense personal relationship were intertwined. The session is part of the fifth season of the Reading Club, a cycle dedicated to delving deeper into Rusiñol's literary work with dramatized readings, discussions and the participation of special guests. With this program, the Sitges Museums reaffirm their commitment to a more plural and critical reading of heritage, which allows for the incorporation of new perspectives and recognition of the role of women in cultural history. A way to open museums to necessary questions and invite the public to rediscover art, literature and collective memory from other perspectives.
