The Sitges Fishermen’s Guild has presented the video Beyond the Sea, which collects the direct experience of the municipality’s fishermen, sharing their stories of life and work at sea. This audiovisual proposal, which has the collaboration, among others, of the Sitges Museums, shows in a close and realistic way what the fishing profession is like today, and especially invites young people to discover a profession full of challenges, satisfactions and strong roots in the territory.
Through the testimonies of the fishermen and images of the Sitges maritime environment, the video is also an opportunity to highlight the intangible heritage linked to the world of fishing and raise awareness about its cultural and economic importance.
This video, directed by Isaac Carbonell, was born from an idea promoted by the Sitges Biodiversity organization and, among others, reflects a collaboration between the Fishermen's Guild and Sitges Museums, initiated in 2021, with the cultural activity El Sitges més mariner, which consists of a tour of the Maricel Museum to discover works by the Luminista School inspired by marine life, accompanied by traditional fishing gear —such as nanses, catúfols or tresmalls— provided by the Guild. Between 2021 and 2024, this activity has been offered on an occasional basis within the Sitges Museums cultural program, without the gastronomic experience that appears in the video, and during the past year it has been carried out on 10 occasions, with the participation of a total of 164 people.
With this new audiovisual resource, which can be viewed on the website of the Fishermen's Brotherhood and on the official YouTube channel of GALP Costa Central, the two entities reaffirm their commitment to preserving and disseminating the municipality's maritime identity and continuing to work together to bring heritage closer to citizens.
