The Sitges Heritage Consortium approves the 2027 Budget, sets priorities with a new work program and establishes the Acquisitions Plan
Last week, the Sitges Heritage Consortium held its Executive Committee and General Council meetings, where the main lines of action for the Sitges Museums in 2027 were discussed. The meetings served to advance the planning for the coming year, with the initial approval of a budget of €5.56 million, the staffing plan, and the list of positions in Acquisitions.
These decisions are part of a transformation of the Sitges Museums, marked by a commitment to strengthening heritage conservation, improving facilities, and updating museum narratives to connect with new audiences. This focus is also reflected in the development of the 2027-2031 Strategic Plan, which will define the institution's roadmap for the coming years.
A Work Program Focused on Heritage and People
The 2027 Work Program outlines the Consortium's main actions for the coming year, highlighting the completion of the first two phases of consolidation and functional adaptation works at the Romantic Museum – Can Llopis, and the management of projects related to conservation, research, education, outreach, and service improvement.
Among the priorities is the need to continue advancing the adaptation and maintenance of heritage buildings, as well as the preventive conservation and restoration of collections. The program also aims to strengthen the social role of museums, promote community participation, and develop a more accessible and inclusive cultural offering.
In this regard, the Sitges Museums continue working to consolidate an institutional model that, beyond conserving and exhibiting heritage, becomes a space for knowledge, reflection, and community engagement.
Restoring the Facilities: One of the Major Challenges
The restoration of the Romantic Museum – Can Llopis and Can Falç remains one of Sitges' main heritage challenges. The Consortium is working on planning the necessary actions to restore these spaces and define their future uses, with the aim of making them available to the public once again.
At the same time, improvements to the Maricel Palace, owned by the Sitges City Council, and the modernization of existing museum facilities are part of the institution's development plans, with special attention to accessibility, conservation, and the quality of the visitor experience.
A New Acquisitions Plan to Enrich the Collections
One of the key agreements reached by the General Council was the approval of the Sitges Heritage Consortium's Acquisitions Plan, which establishes a framework to guide the growth of the collections and ensure that new additions meet heritage, scientific, and museological criteria.
The plan aims to strengthen historical collections while simultaneously expanding museum narratives with new perspectives on society, culture, and identity. Key priorities include the inclusion of women artists, diversity, contemporary artistic expressions, and areas related to territory, landscape, collecting, illustration, comics, and film.
This policy builds upon the work carried out over the past two years. Between 2025 and 2026, the Sitges Museums acquired 28 works of art, with an investment of €73,450.40, incorporating pieces by artists such as Joan Llimona, Valentín de Zubiaurre, Costus, Joaquín de Miró, José de Zamora, Artur Carbonell, and José Mira Lluch, among others.
These acquisitions are complemented by donations, such as nine objects linked to the doll collection and 274 objects from the Mariano Andreu Archive, as well as deposits from the National Art Collection of the Generalitat of Catalonia, which have allowed for the incorporation of eight works in 2015 and 166 in 2022.
This growth has contributed to expanding the diversity of the holdings and fostering new interpretations of the heritage, as demonstrated in the various presentations of the exhibition program "New Acquisitions for New Narratives."
Towards More Open, Inclusive, and Connected Museums
The priorities approved for 2027 align with the work of the future Strategic Plan 2027-2031 for the Museums of Sitges, currently under development.
This new strategic framework aims to reinforce the position of the Museums of Sitges as a leading cultural institution, deeply rooted in the region and with a national and international reach. Its objectives include renewing museum narratives, improving accessibility, preserving heritage, fostering citizen participation, and strengthening partnerships with institutions, organizations, and cultural stakeholders.
The Consortium seeks to move towards museums that combine the unique artistic and architectural heritage of Sitges with a contemporary perspective, incorporating new voices and promoting dialogue between the collections and the community.
A Plan to Guarantee the Future of Sitges' Heritage
With the agreements adopted at the meetings on October 29, the Sitges Heritage Consortium lays the groundwork for its management in the coming year and continues a renewal process focused on heritage preservation, the restoration of facilities, and the improvement of public service.
The challenge is to continue making the Sitges Museums an open, accessible cultural institution committed to its community, preserving the town's artistic legacy and projecting it into the future.
