
The work and relevance of Joaquim Sunyer is the subject of a seminar organised by Museus de Sitges and to be held in the Saló d’Or of the Palau de Maricel on 13 December. The initiative is being carried out to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birth and will feature the participation of renowned experts in his work. Coordination has been carried out by Vinyet Panyella, the artist’s biographer.
Joaquim Sunyer (Sitges, 1874 - 1956) is one of the leading figures of Noucentisme and a key artist in Catalan painting in the first half of the 20th century. He was also one of the painters who best portrayed the human landscape of Sitges in the first third of the century. The Maricel Museum in women's faith with four portraits in its collections: Woman in a cafe (1900) –on loan–, Maternity (1908), Elvira with the cat (1918) and Portrait of Montserrat Gorgas i Ferrer (1930).
The Joaquin Sunyer Seminar will approach his work from different perspectives. Vinyet Panyella will discuss the Luminisme stage in Noucentisme, Francesc Quilez will focus on his presence in the MNAC collections, Susanna Portell will analyze the critical reception, Mariona Seguranyes will discuss the connections with Realism and Eliseu Trenc will emphasize his relationship with Ramon Pichot in Montmartre. The seminar will be completed with a tour of the Maricel Museum following his work and with the Piece of the Month, by Vinyet Panyella and dedicated to Woman in a cafe.
