The collections of the Sitges Museums travel to Germany

The collections of the Sitges Museums are strengthening their international profile with their participation in the exhibition Barcelona Moderna: from Gaudí to Picasso, a show dedicated to Catalan artistic modernism that will first be on display at the Kunsthalle Munich and subsequently at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam.

The Sitges Museums' participation will be prominent in the exhibition project, as the Cau Ferrat Museum will have its own dedicated space within the show. This will allow German audiences to discover the unique character of Santiago Rusiñol's house-studio, its collections, and its role in shaping Catalan Modernism.

The Sitges Museums will also contribute with a significant loan, enabling the exhibition to showcase some of the most important pieces held at the Cau Ferrat Museum. Among the works traveling to Munich are four emblematic paintings: El Greco's Penitent Magdalene; Ramon Casas's Rusiñol on a Wrought Iron Lamp; Morphine, by Santiago Rusiñol, and The Widow, by Isidre Nonell.

The loan also includes a selection from the Santiago Rusiñol Collection, consisting of several wrought iron pieces, as well as two hoists and a crane arm, dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. This collection will allow the exhibition to showcase another of the unique facets of the Cau Ferrat and of Santiago Rusiñol's collecting, and will help contextualize the museum section within the exhibition.

From Munich to Potsdam

Modern Barcelona: from Gaudí to Picasso will open at the Kunsthalle Munich on October 23, 2026, where it will be on view until February 21, 2027. The exhibition offers a glimpse into the creative effervescence of Catalonia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries and the diversity of artistic languages.

After Munich, the exhibition will travel to the Barberini Museum in Potsdam, where it will be on view from March 20 to June 20, 2027. In this second phase, the Sitges Museums' participation will be represented by four paintings by El Greco, Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol, and Isidre Nonell.

The Sitges Museums' presence in this exhibition offers an opportunity to showcase the artistic heritage preserved in Sitges internationally and, in particular, to situate the Cau Ferrat Museum and its collections within the international narrative of Catalan artistic modernity that will be presented to the German public. This loan also strengthens the Sitges Museums' collaboration with other cultural institutions and contributes to giving international visibility to collections closely linked to the artistic and cultural history of Sitges.
