Sitges fue uno de los lugares predilectos de Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Y los Museos de Sitges son prueba fehaciente de ello. En sus colecciones se encuentran seis obras del pintor malagueño. Con motivo del cincuentenario de su muerte, los Museos de Sitges, en colaboración con el Museo Picasso de Barcelona, ​​programaron una serie de actividades que resaltan sus vínculos con la ciudad y su relación con Santiago Rusiñol. Una exposición, una ruta, conferencias y otras propuestas socioculturales permitirán visualizar Sitges en el universo picassiano de una manera relevante.

La conmemoración del Año Picasso en Sitges pone de relieve los vínculos directos que el genio malagueño tuvo con Sitges en dos etapas de su vida: por un lado, a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX -cuando la visitó en varias ocasiones gracias a su amistad con el artista Carles Casagemas- y en la década de 1930, tras la muerte de Santiago Rusiñol, a quien conoció décadas antes, cuando volvió a visitar el Cau Ferrat, que estaba siendo acondicionado para abrir como museo público.

La relación de Picasso con Sitges fue significativa y tuvo una influencia directa en su obra. Su amistad con el pintor Carles Casagemas, quien residía en la ciudad durante temporadas, ya que su madre nació en Sitges y sus hermanas residían allí, atrajo a Picasso. Allí visitó el Cau Ferrat y conoció a Santiago Rusiñol. En poco tiempo, Picasso realizó 22 retratos de Rusiñol, en una época en la que el joven artista se acercó a los intelectuales modernistas catalanes, siempre presentes en Quatre Gats. De hecho, se cree que podrían aparecer otros retratos allí.

Rusiñol's painting was strongly influenced the young Picasso, and also by El Greco in a significant way, which the modernists claimed and projected. Since 1894, Cau Ferrat housed two works by the Cretan artist that Rusiñol had acquired in Paris: Les llagrimes de Sant Pere and Magdalena penitent.

Santiago Rusiñol became a pioneer in collecting works by Picasso at the turn of the century. The Cau Ferrat Museum has a painting of his in its background (La cursa de braus) and five drawings. All date from the years 1900-01.

The exhibition The set of Rusiñol's portraits made by Picasso constitute one of the central axes of the exhibition Rusiñol vist per Picasso, organized by Museu de Sitges, with the collaboration of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. The exhibition is coordinated by Ignasi Domènech, head of Sitges Museum Collections, and has significant contributions from the doctor in Art History Eduard Vallès. The inauguration took place today at the Maricel Museum, where it can be visited until September 24.

Rusiñol vist per Picasso presents 29 works, 9 come from the Picasso Museum, loaned to Sitges Museums for the exhibition. The six pieces from the Cau Ferrat Museum are also on display, as well as other works from private collections. Also on display are reproductions of Picasso drawings obtained from periodical magazines and publications and of which, in some cases, the originals are unknown.

The portraits that Rusiñol made of Picasso are the common thread of the exhibition. There are some that are made in unusual supports, such as, for example, an inventory book of a grocery store, the result of the creative voracity of the artist from Málaga at that time. In addition to Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Miquel Utrillo, Ramon Pichot and Júlia Peraire are also present. Among the reproduced works, there are two from the Musée National Picasso in Paris that were unpublished until 1990.

The activities. In addition to the exhibition, the Picasso Year celebration in Sitges is accompanied by other activities organized by Museus de Sitges. Cultural routes, conferences and workshops make up the entire proposal, which starts this first weekend of June and ends in October.

A physical and intellectual itinerary through the streets of Sitges tracing the connections with Picasso through various approaches. In this itinerary, names such as Picasso, Rusiñol, Utrillo, Casagemas, El Greco, Maricel, Cau Ferrat or the Platja de Sant Sebastià intersect, based on documents and testimonies that link Sitges with one of the most relevant artists in the history of the art.

The Museu del Cau Ferrat has a Picasso oil in its background (La cursa de braus) and four drawings (La familia de Don Paco en casa, Dues dones ballant, Dues figures de dones / Fauna de taverna i Dues dones sentades / Papallones d’ales cremades), all dated between 1900 and 1901.Four years ago the doctor in art history Eduard Vallès shed new light on the disappearance of a Picasso drawing in Cau Ferrat, shortly after the death of Santiago Rusiñol.
