The third phase of the review of the Archeological Chart intends to find more information about ships sunk in Sitges in 1642

Last week we started to work on the third phase of the 2016 campaign for the review of the Underwater Archeological Chart of Sitges, which will last until 5 September. Works carried out in this stage consist, on one hand, highlighting located sites, and of the other, performing geophysical tasks at the beachfront of Garraf.

The prospection carried out at sites found in 2015 were provisionally named "Galió Sitges" and their goal is to learn more about the Admiral  ships from Castilian and French-Catalan fleets that sank at the Battle of Barcelona during evening 1 July 1642. These two ships could be, according to archaeologists, La Madalena -manned by Hugo de Guise de O'Donnell- or the Guise of Lady of Victory -manned by Hercule Conigan de Cangé-. For this task, the Sitges Heritage Consortium counts with the support of the ship Thetis, belonging to the Centre for Underwater Archaeology of Catalonia, temporarily transferred to the Directorate General of Heritage of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

The works during the third phase of the review of the Underwater Archaeological Chart of Sitges allow geophysical prospection tasks facing the beach of Garraf in a range between 10 and 25 meters deep in front of Sitges, a place with scattered remains of Roman materials surfaced by trewlers in which it will be possible to locate new roman shipwrecks,

 The works are organized by Sitges Heritage Consortium, under the direction of archaeologist Pedro Izquierdo i Tugas and count with the financial support from the Provincial Government of Barcelona and the sponsorship of several important Marinas and going concerns; Port Aiguadolç. Ginesta Yacht Club Garraf, Sitges Yacht Club, Club de Mar in Sitges, restaurant Akelarre and DAN Europe. Also counts with the support of 28 volunteers duly authorized by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia and by the Estado Mayor of the Spanish Armada.
