Over the last few weeks, work has been done on the renovation and repair of several walls in the interior of Can Falç, with the aim of keeping the emblematic building of La Ribera in good condition before carrying out the second stage of his refurbishment. This second stage will run through 2020, and will take place before archeological works which are scheduled for and is pre-planned for the end of the year.
The intervention involved the repair and cladding of the basement walls of the west wing of the ground floor, which were exposed in the conditioning work five years ago. At that time, it seemed interesting to look at the 17th-century walls with layers of earth and lime mortar, but over time this type of wall, which was always covered with lime, quickly lost its consistency when exposed to air.
Works began in December and will end this week. Work has focused on consolidating the walls, to gain consistency, and to recover their lime-mortar cladding.
It is planned that the Sitges Heritage Consortium will soon dismantle the entire slab of the west wing, which is currently plastered, in order to rebuild it identical to the original in appearance, but with the necessary strength for a public use. The original flooring will be recovered and reused.
Once this is done, it will be possible to remove the the modern partitions and metalwork pieces that were installed in the seventies and eighties of the last century.
Once the west wing is secured and conditioned, archaeological works are scheduled to find new remains of the Roman past in Sitges, as the 16th and 17th century pavements directly cover Roman paving here. Can Falç is located on the corner of the medieval town of Sitges, and Roman remains have been found around it.
The Can Falç building is managed by the Sitges Heritage Consortium, once transferred by the Diputació de Barcelona or the Barcelona Provincial Government, last holder, to the City Hall of Sitges in 2015. The first stage of the refurbishment allowed the consolidation of the structure and the repair the ground floor. The next stage will take place this 2020.
